The Environmental Sustainability Minor is ideal for those seeking a flexible minor focused on the sustainability of Earth's ecosystems, societies, and economies. The ES minor is highly flexible and designed to serve all students at the University of Illinois, regardless of their major or college. The open choice of classes allows students to examine sustainability from any perspective they wish, from the humanities to the technical. All courses required for the ES minor may be applied toward the ES major if you decide to learn more about sustainability and the environment.

Required Courses

  • Introductory Earth's Physical Systems, Resources and Hazards Course: 3 - 4 hours.
  • Introductory "Environment and the Human Response" or "Sustainability, Policy, and Global Change" Course: - 3 - 4 hours
  • ESE 200: Earth Systems: 3 Hours
  • Three Advanced Courses from the approved list, at least two of which are from the ESE or ENSU rubric: 9-12 hours
